The Hows, Whens, and Whys of Small Stream Hopper Fishing
Aside from some of the big stonefly hatches, hopper season is often the most anticipated time on the Rocky Mountain angler's calendar. And while the big rivers offer some fantastic opportunities, fishing smaller streams and tributaries often provides faster fishing-sometimes with some surprisingly large trout. @sidechannelproductions

Fly Tier's Bench: How to Tie Craven's Mr. Jones Cranefly Dry Fly
Переглядів 8842 місяці тому
The Mr. Jones, an adult cranefly pattern that skips, skates, and hops, has proved effective all summer long, especially during the hot afternoons and early mornings when these bugs are most active. I find myself often tying it on when things are slow just because it’s so fun to fish, and more often than not, I end up smiling and laughing at the antics of aggressive fish making fools of themselves.
Fly Tier's Bench: How to Tie the Picky Eater Perdigon
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 місяці тому
Like it or not, competition angling is driving many of the advancements in our sport. And while I generally find Perdigons and their cousins to be pretty boring flies, Zach VanDeHey, a 39-year-old Oregonian, and his approach to his Picky Eater Perdigon gives me hope for the future. VanDeHey hatched the idea for his Picky Eater while feeling was that his conventional Perdigons were sinking too f...

Fly Tier's Bench: How to Tie Dorsey's Top Secret Baetis Fly
Переглядів 8 тис.5 місяців тому
These days there are so many reasonably simple fly patterns that work well but have no soul or appeal to fly tiers. Pat Dorsey took a simple combination of materials and created a fly that is durable, quick, and fun to tie, and it not only gets the job done, but it also looks good doing it. Based off the success of his remarkable Top Secret Midge pattern, Dorsey took a familiar route to alter t...

Rigging Your Tackle - Surgeon's Knot
What size river road cutter did you use for the body? Thank you!
I trimmed the hackle too, then the oldtimers in Eastern ID told me that was all wrong. The fly should sit on the water perpendicular to the surface film with its ass end below the surface film. The full untrimmed circular circumference of the wound hackle keps the wing pointing straight up, just like the natural. Elk hair is a great wing material for the larger Quiggly Cripples too. Great work Charlie
Hola buenos días yo fui a pescar para hay también
Qual número do size hook compativel
Looks amazing - thanks for posting!!!
For practicing any knot, start with two shoe strings of a different color. It's easier to manipulate while your learning the mechanics. I'm 64 years old, eyesight isn't what it used to be and nerve damage in both arms limits what I can do, but I can tie this knot standing in a stream in a fog. Do I prefer a traditional blood knot when nymphing on a tightline using the tag ends as sight indicators, sure, but that's better at the bench than the stream. PS...It's embrassing having my son tie my knots and inconvenient for him, so I also found a easy way to tie a cinch knot using hemostats on a video. I've used the nail knot tool, it takes more time to use and who wants an extra tool dangling, begging to snag your leader at any moment!
Cheer~~~an action of moving downward, dropping, or falling.😊
Jigging is the correct term.
Greatly appreciate the tips!
Another masterpiece Charlie: Looking forward to the article, and I just ordered the materials I didn't yet have. Thanks.
Great video. Fly fishing at its best right there. And a bucket list species for me.
Solid advise, beautiful footage. Thanks Josh… love that last take starting at 2:50!
“Always a student”! Thanks for the great tutorial Landon!
Thanks, could you please discuss briefly, leader and fishing technique.
Landon only hooks huge obese fish. Large and small fish stay away from his fly. Even in small creeks! 😆
…staring at the video…
Interesting. Sinking "a little slower." Not exactly what you'd expect from a Euro jigged nymph.
Mr jones and me…
Barry thanks for the wonderful video, better late then never. It’s 2024 now and I wanted to send my condolences to you for your recent loss of your beloved Cathy. No one knows more than you, she will be dearly missed. Bless ya brother.
Love that wing technique!
Very nice ty!! Tight lines🐜🕷️🐛!!!!
Nice fly!
What size hook did you use
Eric, When you film using the selfie camera on your phone you get a mirror image. But, you can go into your phone and flip the video before publishing it on UA-cam. Then the letters on the dubbing pack will not look like Russian. Best, Bill
This knot is actually a dropper loop not a blood knot.
You spent more time on making the first pass over the the real part of the knot.
great presentation, I really like your explanations and research!
Looks very nice
This just complicated the blood knot. I don’t have trouble holding the tag ends. With this method I have trouble with the entire process
My favorite fish to catch. Just an angry hunk of teeth and muscle
Awesome video :) those wild rainbow are pretty dark in that section of the merced/yosemite creek. Beautiful fish.
INCREDIBLE! what an amazing experience!
I reckon there is no way this won't be repeated at some point. Sunnyside Bench Regular route is a very mellow climb and you can also walk up the descent trail to get there (it was one of the first multipitch trad climbs I ever did). Canyoning the falls is more extreme, but it still gets done occasionally, so I find it very hard to believe that someone won't do this again. Something that I genuinely don't think will get repeated is the kayack descent of the middle falls that someone did a few, maybe 10 years back!
you are right, someone will repeat. I hope they are adequately prepared and have good conditions. It's a hazardous undertaking.
I would have never thought that there would be trout, there. I been to the park many times, Trout in Yousemite Falls the actual falls gee's I learn something new. Got April/ May 24 Fly Fisherman. Its kind of bitter sweet to see an article by Cathy and Barry Beck. With Cathy passing on a few weeks ago.
yes it was an amazing memorable issue to have Cathy's words and photos in there after she passed.
Ross knows how to string my favorite things together.
translation: I know how to carry way to much gear hahahahahaha
Wow!
That is adventure fly fishing at it`s finest! Thanks for sharing.
I would only do that for big fish. You can catch stockers anywhere....
Maybe one day good ol Mr Hankins will start making that sheeting 😁
Apparently, Charlie is selling it in his store the V2 version.
👍👍👏👏
Nope
This is insanely well done!
Thank you
One of my local fly shops had a DynaKing Pro on display. That cam lever feels like a bank vault closing.
🎉 Holy 🎉 Toledo 🎉 Charlie !!!!!!! Reminds me of a Pattern that Dad used to use back in the ‘60’s , for Smallies in Lake ST. Claire !!!!!! Thank You for Your Tutelage!!!!! Greetings from NW Michigan ……. 🌟🎣💫
you are such a great instructor!!!!! thank you so much!
Beauty
Ahhh so nice watching the master from my own backyard tie this pattern. Can’t wait to get down to the shop and spend all my gift cards my wife bought me! Cheers Master Charlie
So happy to finally be able to view this video. While the instructions in FF magazine were pretty detailed, seeing how this is tied makes a world of difference. I was struggling with the legs and the tie off point so now I think I can clean those up! Thanks for sharing, as always… 🙌🏻🎣
Indeed, it's a beautiful nymph
